Togo Calf
Definition
Togo Calf is a full-grain calf leather characterized by a natural, subtle grain, produced to Hermès standards. It's one of the most versatile skins from the French house, prized for its water resistance and scratch durability. As a strap craftsman, I've always seen it as an intelligent choice: it has that compact consistency that allows for a clean bend around the case, doesn't deform with daily wear, and ages beautifully, developing a patina that tells the story of time at the wrist. The grain remains true over time, never fades. For watch straps, Togo offers exceptional dimensional stability: it doesn't stretch, doesn't thin out with use. While Hermès uses it for bags, we also craft it for Rolex 18-20mm, Omega 19-22mm, and Patek Philippe 18mm cases. Natural porosity makes it more comfortable in summer compared to highly chromed leathers.
Frequently asked questions
Can I put a Togo Calf strap on a Rolex Submariner?
Yes, absolutely. The Submariner with 40mm case requires a 20mm strap. Togo, with its dimensional stability, is perfect: it doesn't deform under clasp pressure and maintains its curve around the case. It's also more comfortable than metal in summer.
How does Togo Calf age? Does it develop patina?
Yes, but over longer periods. Togo doesn't develop dramatic patina like Hermès Clemence, for instance. Rather, the grain softens slightly, color deepens, and natural wear marks appear that tell the strap's story. On an Omega Seamaster 18mm, after two years of daily use, you'll see elegant, subtle aging.
Is Togo Calf water and sweat resistant?
It has good natural water resistance thanks to its density and Hermès processing, but it's not waterproof. Sweat won't damage it if dried regularly. For an IWC Portugieser 20mm with daily wear, I recommend not deliberately submerging it and cleaning the strap every two weeks with a damp sponge.
