Definition

Guilloché is born from the rose engine lathe, not from the freehand engraver's hand: this distinction is the first thing I explain to anyone who brings me a dial to identify. The machine — the rose engine lathe — rotates the piece against a fixed spindle called the rubber while the craftsman manually presses the cutting tool following the rosettes on the drum. The result is rigorous geometry but never lifeless: each pass carries with it the micro-pressure of the hand, and that's where you see whether the person working truly knows what they're doing.

The technique is over five hundred years old, but it enters watchmaking in 1680 with Pierre Duhamel, who applies it to a case for the first time. Abraham-Louis Breguet, from 1786 onward, brings it to dials and anchors it in the imagination of the industry: from that moment, guilloché becomes synonymous with high French and Swiss watchmaking. The classical patterns are the solar sunburst, concentric waves, the barleycorn — undulating lines that recall barley grains — and the basketweave. Each has different execution difficulty and requires a different drum configuration.

Today the word guilloché covers situations very far apart from each other. Rolex on the caliber 1908 uses automated engine turning: the cut follows the logic of the historical process, but the absence of the human variable produces an ultra-glossy surface, geometrically flawless and visually flat. CNC machines lower costs and replicate the visual effect, but not the structure of the groove. Anyone who has held a hand-worked Breguet dial and an industrially produced one understands the difference in ten seconds.

At the opposite extreme are craftsmen like J.N. Shapiro, who uses lathes from the Forties and has developed a proprietary pattern — the Infinity weave, a weave within a weave — that no one else executes today. Garrick, in England, has invested in acquiring a rose engine to recover an almost extinct British tradition. Longines used engine turning on the caseback of the caliber 37.9 ABC, with a result that recalls Art Deco scales.

The transparent colored lacquer that sometimes seals the grooves is not an autonomous element: it amplifies the depth of the cut and changes color with the angle of light. Without precise incised geometry beneath it, the lacquer has nothing to tell.

When did guilloché enter watchmaking?
