Definition

Every dial is the result of a precise technical choice, not vague aesthetics. I've seen pieces pass across my workbench where the difference between grand feu and petit feu was imperceptible to the naked eye, yet it determined how the dial would resist light over time. Grand feu—firing at extremely high temperature, up to 900°C—creates a vitrified enamel that doesn't fade. Petit feu works at lower temperatures and allows finer details, like the overlaid Arabic numerals Breguet uses on the Classique Souscription. The two integrate on the same dial, but they're not interchangeable.

Guilloché is another technique you understand only by touching it: mechanical or rose engine engraving that generates geometric patterns in micrometric relief. When translucent enamel is overlaid—as in flinqué—light bounces off the engraved base and creates depth. It's physics, not magic. Plique-à-jour pushes this principle to the extreme: the enamel is suspended in a metal lattice with no solid support, allowing light to pass through like stained glass. Technically fragile, difficult to repair.

Oriental techniques follow different logic. Japanese urushi builds itself through accumulated layers of natural resin lacquer, sanded one by one. Vietnamese sơn mài works similarly but with more vivid pigments and a process that can exceed fifteen hours of work per dial. The straw marquetry on the Chopard L.U.C. Quattro Spirit 25 is pure craftsmanship: tinted rye straw from Burgundy, flattened, cut with a scalpel into hexagons of mere millimeters, and assembled by hand. The variation in fiber thickness eliminates flat reflections.

Surface techniques like PVD and Gerald Charles' Darkblast® belong to a different category: they are physical treatments, not material applications. PVD deposits color under vacuum in molecular layers; Darkblast® is an evolution of blasting that hardens titanium while reducing reflection. Both are evaluated on durability, not immediate appearance. Cold enamel, by contrast, requires no firing but is more vulnerable: useful for sharp details, less suited where there is direct mechanical wear.

Nacre brouillé and Edo Kiriko—the latter being a glass-cutting technique applied to the dial by Daizoh Makihara—show how the boundary between material and technique is often nonexistent. The visual result depends on the choice of gesture, not the material alone. That's what I look for when evaluating a dial: understanding which process generated it.
