Definition

The jumping hour is a complication that displays the time through a window in the dial: the numeral jumps instantly at each hour change, with no progressive movement. It is the opposite of the traditional hand, which sweeps continuously across the dial. The distinction is not merely aesthetic—it is a choice about how time itself is read.

The mechanical origin traces to Josef Pallweber, who patented the first numerical disc system on a pocket watch movement in 1883. Audemars Piguet brought the concept to the wrist in 1921. Since then, the complication has remained rare, not because it is difficult to conceive, but because it is difficult to execute well. The challenge is energetic: the mechanism accumulates force throughout the hour and releases it in an instant. If that release is not perfectly controlled, the disc bounces, or the transition becomes slow and uncertain. Neither is acceptable.

The classical solution employs a jumping spring that yields energy sharply when a cam reaches the trigger point. Many movements use a fly governor—a sort of winged brake—to dampen the release and prevent disc bounce. Chopard in the L.U.C Quattro Spirit 25 uses a star and cam system that keeps the hour and minute mechanisms separate; Bovet in the Récital 15 patented a dual star system to synchronize the jump. Different solutions, same central problem.

The complication appears in variants: the jumping hour can combine with retrograde minutes (as in the Chronoswiss Delphis or Fam al Hut Möbius), or with a second jumping 24-hour timezone, as in the Laventure Transatlantique II. There is also the transparent disc jumping hour, where the hour disc is in sapphire and the numeral appears backlit—a solution used by Otsuka Lotec. Some versions display tens and units on separate discs, as in the Time Jumper, which patents this subdivision.

Related by logic, though distinct, is the dead seconds mechanism (deadbeat seconds): the seconds hand jumps at one-second intervals instead of flowing. A. Lange & Söhne realizes this in the Richard Lange Jumping Seconds with a five-pointed star and an element called a flirt. Habring² adds the same effect to its A11S calibre with only seven additional components. The principle is identical to the jumping hour: accumulated energy, controlled release, clean jump.

At the workbench, I have seen jumping hours that seemed perfect and froze in cold, because the lubricant on the jumping spring had thickened. Temperature is the enemy of this complication more than any other mechanical factor.
