Definition
In watchmaking, the push button is not merely an aesthetic element: it is the physical interface between the wearer and the movement. Its position on the case, its travel, its resistance to pressure determine how reliable it is and how pleasant it is to use every day.
The most important distinction at the bench is between a simple pusher and a pusher with integrated logic. A simple pusher activates a single function: it starts or stops a chronograph, rotates a timezone ring, releases a mechanism. A pusher with integrated logic—the so-called mono-pusher—controls multiple functions in sequence: start, stop, reset of the chronograph with a single button. In the BVL 388 caliber, for example, the pusher at 2 o'clock commands the chronograph while the one at 4 o'clock selects the crown functions: two distinct bodies, two precise roles.
In vintage Excelsior Park chronographs the push-buttons were rectangular, a geometry that today immediately distinguishes the period piece. The reissues instead mount cylindrical pump pushers, with softer travel and sharper return. It is not simply a matter of taste: the internal mechanism changes, and with it the haptic response.
On the front of crowns, David Candaux built an entire design identity around a push-button crown at 6 o'clock, composed of thirty-one components, which retracts under pressure. Leica did something similar with the crown on the ZM 1 and ZM 2 models, where the integrated button echoes the shutter command of M cameras, with a red ceramic insert. These are technically complex solutions that solve a precise problem: eliminating the protruding profile from the case when the crown is not needed.
The push button also appears in closure systems. Dual-pusher deployant clasps require simultaneous pressure on both buttons to open: it is a safeguard against accidental opening. Easy-adjustment systems on bracelet clasps use a button to shift the latch one notch at a time without tools—on many earlier models a toothpick was required to do it. The physical principle is the same: a body that, under pressure, releases or locks a retention mechanism.
One variable that magazines almost always overlook is the quality of the return spring. A pusher that does not return to position with decisiveness—or that remains recessed after pressure—is the first signal of wear or a rushed design. I hear it immediately at the bench.
