Naiad Lock

The Naiad Lock solves a trivial but annoying problem: a screw-down caseback, once tightened to the correct torque, can stop at any angular position. The engraved text arrives crooked, the inscription on the edge is not vertical, and no watchmaker wants to loosen and rescrew by hand until finding the right point—often it doesn't exist, with standard threads.

Omega patented this screw caseback closure system that eliminates the problem at its root. The mechanism provides a mechanically defined stop position: the caseback reaches correct tightness exactly when the orientation of the engraving is as intended. This is not a secondary aesthetic matter. On models like the Seamaster Diver 300M, the Planet Ocean 600M, or the Speedmasters with animated sapphire caseback, the water resistance text, logos, and sculptural decorations must be vertical for visual contract with the viewer. The Naiad Lock guarantees they always are, regardless of operator and how many times it's reopened for service.

From a technical standpoint, the system does not sacrifice water resistance to achieve alignment. On versions certified for 300 or 600 meters depth, the perimeter gasket works correctly precisely because the caseback stops at the position of maximum contact, which coincides with the alignment position. Both requirements—seal and orientation—are resolved in the same mechanical instant.

At the bench, I have seen Omega Naiad Lock casebacks opened and reclosed dozens of times without ever losing the stop position: the mechanical reference holds over time. Panerai adopted a conceptually similar solution on some recent casebacks—the PAM01291 is often cited in this context—but the Naiad Lock patent remains Omega property. The name comes from ancient Greek: the Naiads were nymphs of fresh waters, an allusion to the underwater vocation of the Seamaster line on which the system was born.

For those working in service, the practical difference is immediate: with a Naiad Lock caseback there are no compromises between seal and position. With free threading, instead, you always choose one or the other.
