Lucent Steel A223
Definition
Lucent Steel A223 is not standard stainless steel with better finishing: it's a proprietary Chopard alloy developed over four years with Voestalpine Böhler through a high-temperature remelting process. The number 223 in the name is not decorative—it indicates the Vickers hardness of the alloy, approximately 50% higher than conventional steels like 316L or 904L. That hardness translates into concrete abrasion resistance: a case in Lucent Steel A223 withstands daily scratching better than standard surgical steel does.
The characteristic that distinguishes this material to the naked eye is reflectivity. The homogeneous and pure crystalline structure, achieved precisely through the remelting process that reduces impurities, returns intense white light, closer to white gold than to common steel. It's not a matter of surface finishing: the luminosity emerges from the metallurgical composition. This makes the material particularly effective in contrasting finishes—brushed and polished on the same case—because both surfaces reflect more pronounced than ordinary steel would.
Biocompatibility is REACH certified: the alloy is hypoallergenic, designed for those with metal sensitivities. From a sustainability standpoint, sources oscillate between 70% and 85% recycled content—the variation probably reflects different production batches and years. Chopard uses it primarily in the Alpine Eagle line, where the case and integrated bracelet are both in Lucent Steel A223, but the material has also appeared in some L.U.C. and in Mille Miglia Classic Chronograph variants.
From the bench, I must be honest about one point: working this steel is notoriously difficult. The high hardness means that finishing, polishing, and engraving operations require different tools and times compared to normal steel. I don't have precise data on industrial machining costs, but anyone working pieces in Lucent Steel in the workshop feels it immediately on the wheel.
Frequently asked questions
Why does Lucent Steel A223 appear brighter than 316L stainless steel?
Brightness doesn't depend on surface finish alone. The re-melting process reduces impurities and produces a more homogeneous crystalline structure: light is reflected more uniformly and intensely. It's a metallurgical property, not a cosmetic one.
Is Lucent Steel A223 truly hypoallergenic?
Yes, biocompatibility is REACH certified. The alloy was developed also with the goal of reducing skin reactions typical of certain conventional steels. It remains stainless steel nonetheless: those with marked sensitivities should verify the exact composition with Chopard.
