Teardrop lug

The teardrop lug is not an ornament: it is a structural choice that determines how the case connects to the wrist. The section widens toward the bezel and tapers to a point, following the natural curve of a water droplet. The result is a profile that descends smoothly without sharp edges, reducing the visual perception of diameter and lightening the lateral mass of the case.

I have seen this element on very different benches. Parmigiani Fleurier uses it as a recognition code for the Tonda line from its origins: the teardrop lugs start from the bezel with continuity, without line interruption, and in models with integrated bracelet they become the starting point for the metal curvature. In the Tondagraph GT, the shape has been brought inside the case itself, generating barrel-shaped containers that reinterpret the profile of traditional lugs. Urban Jürgensen applies the same principle on the Big 8 with an even more demanding process: each lug is forged separately, annealed, hand-polished and individually welded to the case. It cannot be automated. Every weld requires visual and manual inspection, and you see it when you compare the joint with that of a mass-produced piece.

The term also appears outside watchmaking in the strict sense. Isotope uses a teardrop form—called Lacrima, a name inspired by the glass lamps of craftsman Paolo Crepax—as a recurring graphic element: bezel marker, crown shape, caseback detail. On the sapphire bezel of the Hydrium X Blink it is the only visual reference point. On the GMT 0°, the same geometry governs the disc and the hand. It is consistent decorative use, but different from the structural approach of Parmigiani or Urban Jürgensen.

There is also a purely technical application, outside the case shape. In aviation, the teardrop entry is one of three methods of entering a holding pattern—together with direct entry and parallel entry—and some aeronautical bezels, such as that on the Watch Angels × Alpina Startimer Pilot IFR, codify it in red to distinguish it from other procedures. The term is the same, the context is completely separate.

From the bench: the cleanliness of the weld on an individual teardrop lug is one of the most reliable indicators of the production care of a piece. When I find oxidation in the joint or imperfections in the polishing, I already know that the rest of the finishing deserves careful examination.
