Stingray leather

IT: Pelle di Razza

Definition

Stingray skin — shagreen in English, galuchat in haute horlogerie French — is the hardest leather that exists. The tiny calcareous pearls that cover the surface, called dermal denticles, have a hardness similar to tooth enamel. It does not scratch. It does not deform. It does not age in the conventional sense — it remains practically identical to itself for decades. This hardness is its main character, but also its constructive particularity: working with stingray skin requires tools different from the normal ones. Saddlery needles wear out more quickly, cutting requires more resistant blades, burnishing the edges is more complex. For this reason, a hand-made stingray watch strap has a cost that reflects the actual working time. The central zone of the stingray — called umbilicus — has the largest and most uniform pearls. It is the most precious and most recognizable part. At the edges the pearls become smaller and irregular. I work exclusively with the central part when I can — the result is more orderly and more distinctive. For pairing: white or ivory stingray on a white gold or platinum Rolex Day-Date is one of the boldest pairings I have ever created. Black stingray on a Richard Mille or Royal Oak is modern and precise. It is not a leather for everyone — it is for those who want something that no one else wears on their wrist.

Frequently asked questions

Why doesn't stingray leather scratch?

Because the surface isn't leather in the conventional sense — it's covered with dermal denticles, small calcified structures with hardness similar to tooth enamel. No object you use daily is hard enough to scratch this surface. It's the most scratch-resistant leather I work with — a stingray watch strap after ten years of daily wear looks identical to the first day.

Is stingray leather difficult to work with?

It's the most challenging of all the leathers I use. The denticles wear down saddlery needles far more quickly than normal. Cutting requires specialized blades. Edge finishing — normally the fastest part — becomes time-consuming because the surface hardness resists burnishing. That's why a hand-made stingray watch strap's price reflects the actual construction time.

Which watches do I pair with stingray leather?

White or ivory stingray on a white gold Day-Date is one of the boldest and most successful pairings I've created. Black stingray on a Royal Oak or Richard Mille is modern and precise. It's not a discreet leather — it's for someone who wants something no one else wears on their wrist. On a classic Rolex or traditional dress watch, stingray is out of place.
