Pekari
Definition
Pekari is an exotic leather sourced from the peccary, a small wild suidae native to Central and South America. At Milano Straps, we work it for watch straps that demand extreme lightness and natural flexibility. Its fibrous structure is surprisingly durable despite minimal weight – rare among exotics. It features fine, almost silky grain and permeability that lets it "breathe" on the wrist. Not an easy leather: it requires careful tanning (typically vegetable) and conscious maintenance. But those who wear it understand immediately why collectors seek it for Patek Philippe Aquanaut, IWC Pilot chronograph 41mm, or Omega Seamaster: direct on the wrist, zero stiffness. Note: peccary is CITES Appendix II – we guarantee legal provenance with full traceability certificates.
Frequently asked questions
Is peccary suitable for a Rolex Datejust 36mm?
Yes, but with awareness. Peccary is too light and "soft" for a Rolex sport watch – the Submariner would destroy it in six months. On a Datejust 36mm dress piece, it works beautifully: the leather follows the wrist naturally, zero stiffness. I don't recommend the GMT-Master II: peccary lacks the structure for 42mm and heavy daily use. If you love softness, consider Aquanaut (40mm) or IWC Portofino (40mm) – they're engineered for lightweight leathers.
How do you maintain a peccary watch strap?
Peccary fears stagnant water and excessive humidity – it can develop mold. Protect it with a natural-based conditioner every 4-6 months, no more (it saturates the leather). Clean with a soft damp cloth, never machine wash. If wet, air-dry slowly – never direct sunlight or heat sources. The patina it develops is part of the charm, not a flaw. For peccary straps, I don't recommend permanent tropical climates: temperate climates are better. If you live in a humid zone, consider a more robust leather like Hermès Barenia vegetable-tanned calf.
What peccary sizes do you offer for watch straps?
We work peccary in 18, 19, 20, 22mm – the standard range for most dress watches and 38-42mm sport watches. 18mm peccary is perfect for vintage Omega Seamaster 300 or Patek Aquanaut 38mm; 20mm covers modern IWC Portofino and Datejust 36mm; 22mm is for Aquanaut 40mm and larger dress watches. The choice depends on your watch and your wrist. If you don't find your size, I can evaluate a custom commission – peccary is versatile.
