Sheepskin

IT: Pecora

Definition

Sheepskin is an exceptionally soft and lightweight leather, characterized by fine and uniform grain. At Milano Straps, we rarely use it for watch straps because, while elegant, it lacks the robustness we require. It's permeable to moisture and tends to wear quickly under high-stress applications like a watch strap. However, with special treatments and DWP (Dry Weather Protection), it becomes interesting for summer or casual straps on lightweight sports watches. Sheepskin breathes exceptionally well, perfect if you seek maximum comfort. In Italian tanning tradition, it's often used for delicate leather goods, not durable components. On a Rolex Submariner or Omega Seamaster you wouldn't recommend it; on a vintage dress watch or lightweight travel watch, with proper precautions, it can work. It requires constant maintenance and weather protection.

Frequently asked questions

Can I mount a sheepskin strap on a diving watch like a Rolex Submariner?

Strongly discouraged. Sheepskin absorbs water and isn't resistant to the constant tension required on professional tool watches. On a Submariner you want Barenia, box calf, or cordovan. If you love softness, consider anilina calf strap for dress watches, not diving watches.

Is sheepskin suitable for a summer 20mm strap on a vintage Omega Seamaster?

Could work in a controlled setting: summer, minimal pool exposure, weekly maintenance. But honestly, for a vintage Seamaster I prefer mass-dyed calf or light tan alligator. Sheepskin on a Seamaster 300M? No. On a 1960s Seamaster 30, spare strap for dry occasions? Maybe, but with risks.

How do I maintain a sheepskin strap?

Protect it from absolute moisture. Apply nourishing cream every 2-3 weeks. After rain, dry within 4 hours. Avoid extreme temperatures. On an IWC Portofino dress watch at 18mm it could deliver that vintage softness the owner seeks. Always assess real-world use: leisure vacation versus daily wear.
