21mm Straps — Every leather for every wrist

21mm is an in-between size. It's not the standard lug width on most watches, but rather the one chosen for chronographs and high-end sports pieces, where the lug needs to handle a thicker movement without weighing down your wrist. This means a 21mm strap can't just be a scaled-down version of a 20mm model: the ratio between width at the lug and the taper toward the buckle has to be designed from scratch, otherwise the piece sits crooked or compresses your wrist unnaturally.

Each leather responds differently to this proportion. Alligator, with its wide and even scales, holds its shape well on a lug as wide as 21mm, because the skin has no natural elasticity to compensate for: the cut just needs to land on the right scale. Cordovan does the opposite — it's a poreless leather, very dense, and in the first months it molds to your wrist, developing a deep patina right at the flex points, so on a wider lug the adaptation is slower but more visible over time. Ostrich, because of its follicles, has a texture that reads more clearly at 21mm than on narrower sizes: the quill marks are further apart and show up better.

Anyone wearing a Daytona or a Glashütte Original with a 21mm lug knows the difference shows most at the buckle: if the taper is too sharp, the strap makes an unnatural crease right below the lug. That's why we work the taper piece by piece, not from a fixed template.
