American Vegetable-Tanned

IT: Vegetale Americano

Definition

American Vegetable from Wicket & Craig is the vegetable-tanned leather I prefer when I want pure solidity without compromise. Oak bark tannins, slow process of 60+ days: the leather breathes, naturally absorbs the salts and patinas from your wrist, and ages with a progression that on a 20mm thick watch strap becomes almost tactile. It's not Hermès Barenia (which has superior initial softness), but it has a structural density that on a Rolex Submariner 40mm or an IWC Pilot's 46mm guarantees mechanical stability. The fiber remains compact even after years. I recommend American Vegetable when the collector knows the leather must *work*: watch straps that breathe, mold to your wrist, patina with your hands. On a Patek Philippe Aquanaut 40mm? No. On a Zenith Pilot Type 20 or a vintage Heuer Monza? Yes, perfect.

Frequently asked questions

How does American Vegetable-Tanned age on a watch strap?

With linear, honest progression. In the first three months the color darkens slightly, the fiber softens by 15-20%. After six months the first natural micro-creases appear—these aren't defects, they're controlled elasticity. At one year, the strap has absorbed the salt from your wrist and develops an unmistakable matte patina. On a 40mm Rolex GMT-Master II, the contrast between the original dark fiber and the contact zones on your wrist becomes very visible. It's real aging, not cosmetic.

Is it suitable for an elegant strap or only for sport?

Territorially sport. The structure remains visibly rough even after finishing, the texture is pronounced. On an Omega Seamaster 300M 42mm with blue dial? Perfect, total legitimacy. On a Patek Philippe Calatrava 40mm? No—it would need a vegetable-tanned European leather or Box Calf. The initial rigidity is also the point: it holds its shape even under stress, it doesn't bend like a Barenia. For sport watch straps 18-22mm, especially on divers or pilots, it's a conscious choice.

How much maintenance does it require?

Minimal, paradoxically. It's not leather that smells of "protected." Every 6 months, a dry brush to remove dust and salt crystals, maybe a light application of neatsfoot oil if the climate is particularly dry. No cream, no conditioner obsessively applied. The point of American Vegetable Tanned is that it self-regulates: it takes what the environment gives it. On a 20mm strap for a Breitling Navitimer 41mm or an IWC Pilot's Chronograph, this means the leather becomes denser over time, not soft. Keep it dry, occasional brush, let it patina. That's it.
