Edge Painting - Tintura a Costa

IT: Tintura a Costa

Definition

Edge staining is an essential technique for those of us, like me, who appreciate the details in quality watch straps. This finishing consists of applying a stain to the raw cut edges of the strap, protecting them and enhancing their aesthetics. It's a practice that requires precision and knowledge of materials, since the color of the edge can be matched to that of the leather or stitching, creating unique contrasts. Edge staining not only adds a visual touch, but also protects the edge from wear. For collectors, this technique is a hallmark of craftsmanship and care. Frequently asked questions

Why is it important?

It protects the leather layers of the watch strap, preventing them from separating or fraying. A well-finished edge is a key indicator of craft quality.

How is it done?

By hand, using a specialized tool—often a hot burnisher—to apply the finish. I apply multiple layers with intermediate drying and sanding passes, until the surface is perfectly smooth and beveled.

What's the difference from "rembordé"?

With rembordé, the edges of the outer leather are folded under the lining, hiding the cut. With edge painting, I leave the cut visible but seal and decorate it.
