Shark Skin (Sharkskin)
Definition
Sharkskin is an exotic leather derived from shark skin, characterized by a naturally rough and granular texture. In our atelier, we craft it into exceptional watch straps: its irregular surface, formed by tiny dermal placules, offers unique grittiness and natural grip that requires no artificial treatment. It's uncommon in the watch strap world – precisely why it captivates collectors seeking something radically different from calf, alligator, or ostrich. Shark leather is durable, resists moisture better than many leathers, and develops a fascinating patina over time. We primarily work with undyed sharkskin to preserve that wild texture. Note: shark leather is CITES-regulated for certain species; we source only from certified, legal origins of non-endangered sharks.
Frequently asked questions
Why choose sharkskin for a watch strap?
Sharkskin is the choice of collectors wanting a completely different tactile and visual experience. That granular texture isn't just aesthetic: it offers exceptional grip on the wrist, doesn't slip, and the leather breathes naturally. On a sports watch – think Submariner or GMT Master – or on a vintage dress piece, sharkskin creates personality. It's elegant provocation. And yes, it ages beautifully, developing subtle hues and a patina that tells the story of worn time.
Is sharkskin really moisture-resistant?
Yes. The structure of shark leather – those micro-placules – creates a natural barrier. It's not waterproof, of course, but it resists better than traditional calf. It's perfect for straps destined for diving watches or for anyone who loves water. A Rolex Submariner or Omega Seamaster on sharkskin breathes well and won't deteriorate. I still recommend drying thoroughly after prolonged saltwater exposure. Maintenance? Minimal. A soft cloth now and then.
What strap sizes do you recommend for sharkskin?
Sharkskin truly shines on sporty straps in 20-22mm – think Daytona at 20mm, or Explorer II at 22mm. But it works magnificently on thinner dress watches too (18-19mm), where that rough texture creates contrast with formal elegance. My advice? Sharkskin loves wrists that actually wear it, not leave it in a drawer. On an IWC Pilot or Patek Aquanaut, it becomes part of the watch's story.
