Leather Selection - how to choose your material

IT: Selezione della Pelle

Definition

Leather selection is perhaps the part of my work that requires the most experience and produces the most significant differences in the final result. It is not enough to choose the type of leather — you must choose the right piece of that leather. Every leather is a natural material and as such is variable. Two pieces of the same calf, from the same tannery, from the same batch can have slightly different texture, softness, and response to dye. The craftsman's task is to recognize these differences before cutting — to select the piece that has the right characteristics for that specific watch strap. The criteria I use for selection: uniformity of grain in the cutting area, absence of natural marks (scars, excessive veining) that could compromise durability, response to flexing, thickness measured with a micrometer in areas that will bear the most stress (the lug holes, the saddle stitch, the edges). It is not a quick process — but it is what separates a watch strap that lasts twenty years from one that deteriorates after two. For exotic leathers the selection is even more critical. The ventral zone of alligator has scales different from the dorsal zone. The center of stingray skin has pearls different from the edges. Python has scales that vary in size along its length. Every cut is a decision — and every decision has consequences on the finished watch strap.

Frequently asked questions

How do I recognize quality leather before purchase?

By touch before sight. A fine vegetable-tanned leather has a softness that isn't weakness — there's structure beneath it. By scent, genuine leather has a perfume that cannot be confused with synthetic. By flex, it doesn't crackle and doesn't resist excessively. In raking light, the grain is three-dimensional — not flat like a print. With experience, you learn to understand in seconds.

Why can two watch straps of the same material be different?

Because leather is a natural material and variability is inherent. Two pieces of the same calf, from the same batch, from the same tannery can differ in grain, softness, response to dye. An experienced craftsman selects the right piece for each watch strap — he doesn't use whatever comes to hand. It's part of the work, not a detail.

Can I choose the leather myself for a bespoke Milano Straps watch strap?

Yes — for bespoke Milano Straps watch straps, the process begins precisely with leather selection together with you. I show you the samples, explain the differences, discuss the pairing with your watch. The final choice is always shared. I don't impose the material — I propose it based on years of experience, but the final word is yours, since you'll be wearing it.
