Stingray / Galuchat (Razza) - Exotic leather strap
Definition
Stingray, known as galuchat in the luxury leather world, is an exotic skin sourced from marine ray. Characterized by natural, regular nodules that create a unique and unmistakable texture, galuchat was historically used by European master craftsmen for luxury objects. Its peculiarity lies in structure: small natural bone granules distributed uniformly beneath the epidermis provide extraordinary resistance and unmatchable aesthetics. To the touch, stingray has an almost "sandy" texture, quite pleasant. When applied to a watch strap, galuchat adds a note of decisive and sophisticated character: it's not a leather for everyone, but for those who collect with awareness and seek the exceptional. Processing requires very specific skills — the skin is fragile during tanning and requires particular treatments. At Milano Straps, we work galuchat with vegetable tanning when possible, preserving its natural patina. It requires conscious maintenance, but ages magnificently.
Frequently asked questions
Can I really use a galuchat strap on a Rolex Submariner or Patek Philippe Aquanaut?
Absolutely yes, and the result is striking. Galuchat on a Submariner 41mm creates a fascinating contrast with the brushed steel case — the nodular texture catches light differently than smooth leather. On an Aquanaut (approximately 40mm), galuchat enhances the watch's retro sportiness, playing on its lived-in leather nature. The structural resistance of galuchat makes it suitable even for immersion straps. The only caveat: galuchat doesn't love prolonged repeated fresh water immersion. If you wear it for occasional swimming, it's fine. If you swim daily, I suggest a more traditional leather.
Is galuchat CITES protected? Can I really buy it?
Intelligent question. Stingray is indeed subject to CITES regulation in many countries, as some species are vulnerable. At Milano Straps, we work exclusively with certified suppliers that guarantee legal origin and sustainability of raw materials. The galuchat we use has complete documentation and traceability. I can assure you that every strap we sell is legal and imported according to international regulations. If you buy from non-certified sources, then yes, there is legal risk. With us, zero problems.
How do I clean and maintain a galuchat strap? Is it difficult?
Not difficult, just conscious. Galuchat doesn't tolerate harsh detergents. A damp sponge in lukewarm water, light rubbing, then air-dry naturally. If the nodule accumulates dirt (dust in the texture), a soft brush — like a barber's brush — is your best friend. Avoid greasy creams; if you use balm, choose light formulas without silicones. Galuchat ages magnificently: natural patina is desired, not a problem. Store it in a dry environment. If you accidentally wet it, dry it immediately and don't put it in direct sun. With these small precautions, a galuchat strap will last you decades and become increasingly fascinating.
