Exotic Skins - exotic leathers for watch straps
Definition
Exotic leathers is the name I give to all hides from non-bovine animals: reptiles, birds, cartilaginous fish. Alligator, crocodile, python, karung, lizard, monitor lizard, ostrich, stingray. Each material has its own character — there is no hierarchy, there is only conscious choice. When a client asks me for an exotic leather, the first question I ask is not 'which do you prefer' but 'what watch do you wear and how do you wear it'. Because the answer changes everything: alligator for those who want haute horlogerie classicism, python for those who don't fear presence, stingray for those who want something no one else wears, lizard for those who want the discretion of exotic. All exotic leathers I use are CITES certified — Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species. It is not a formality: it is the guarantee that the animal comes from controlled farms, that the supply chain is traced, that the purchase does not contribute to the reduction of wild populations. I work only with certified European suppliers. Tanning is the factor that separates extraordinary exotic from mediocre. Vegetable tanning brings out the natural texture of every leather — the scales gain depth, color penetrates rather than remaining on the surface, the patina over time is that of living material. Chrome tanning uniformizes and flattens. I always choose the first.
Frequently asked questions
Are all Milano Straps exotic skins CITES certified?
Yes, without exception. I work exclusively with European suppliers who guarantee CITES certification for every batch. Every exotic leather watch strap can be accompanied by traceability documentation upon request. It's not a guarantee I seek — it's the minimum acceptable standard for working with these materials with peace of mind.
How do I choose the right exotic skin for my watch?
I always start with the watch. For dress watches and haute horlogerie: alligator, Nile crocodile, lizard, Nile monitor. For watches with strong personality: reticulated python, stingray. For those who want discrete exoticism: karung, African ostrich. If you don't know where to start, tell me the model and how you wear it — I'll tell you which skin makes sense.
Do exotic skins require different care than calf leather?
Yes. Reptile skins don't want products for bovine leather — the pH and formulation are different. For alligator, crocodile, python, karung and lizard I always use creams specifically formulated for exotic skins, applied rarely and in small amounts. Ostrich and stingray have their own specificities. For every skin I sell, I provide precise care instructions — it's not an afterthought, it's part of the work.
