Bovine Nubuck

IT: Nubuck Bovino

Definition

Bovine nubuck is a suede-like leather obtained from the inner side of bovine hide, buffed and velveted through mechanical abrasion. Unlike suede – more delicate – nubuck originates from already noble leathers, guaranteeing structural integrity ideal for watch straps. Its hallmark is the silky touch, the ability to absorb natural dyes, and the patina developing with use. In the atelier, I favour it for dressier straps: on a 36mm Datejust or an IWC Portugieser it creates a sophisticated, almost vintage effect. It requires conscious maintenance – regular brushing and water protection – but rewards you with the character collectors seek. Specialized Italian tanneries ensure well-oriented fibres and dye solidity.

Frequently asked questions

Is bovine nubuck suitable for a Rolex strap?

Absolutely. Bovine nubuck is perfect for dress Rolex: Datejust 36mm, Day-Date, Cellini. On 18-20mm sizes it delivers elegance without visual overload. I advise against sport watches (Submariner, GMT-Master) because water is its natural enemy. Weekly brushing and water-resistant pouches are essential.

How durable is bovine nubuck versus box calf?

Box calf is tougher and more water-repellent. Bovine nubuck is equally durable structurally – the fibre is solid – but requires environmental protection. On a 20-22mm strap for an Omega Seamaster in dress version, nubuck holds well if maintained. The real difference: box is 'eternal', nubuck is 'stunning as long as you care for it'. Not a limitation – an aesthetic choice.

How do I protect a bovine nubuck strap from wear?

Soft brush weekly to realign the fibres. Clear protective spray every 3-4 months. Avoid prolonged sweat exposure – wear the strap on formal occasions. For a 21mm Patek Aquanaut, this maintenance routine keeps nubuck intact for 2-3 years. If patina darkens too much, light sanding with fine-grit paper rejuvenates it.

The next step
