Tejus Lizard / Teju Leather

IT: Lucertola Tejus / Teju

Definition

Tejus leather comes from the Tupinambis teguin, a South American lizard whose skin displays a natural, geometric pattern—tiny hexagons running across the surface. We've been working with it at Milano Straps for years: the grain is authentic, no artificial stamping needed. Softer than python, more resilient than crocodile when crafted into 18–22mm watch straps. Supply is selective; European tanneries produce limited quantities for the luxury sector. Legally tradeable in Europe (CITES II), though proper documentation is essential. It develops a subtle patina over time without additional treatments. Not a mainstream exotic like alligator or python—collectors who choose it understand its rarity. Perfect for vintage Rolex Datejust 36mm, Omega Seamaster dress, Patek Philippe Calatrava, or IWC Portugieser. Conversation piece on the wrist.

Frequently asked questions

Can I put Tejus on a Rolex Submariner 40mm?

Technically yes, our Tejus straps fit 20mm lugs. But the Submariner is a tool watch; Tejus is refined, exclusive—the pairing loses character. Better on a Datejust 36mm or a vintage Seamaster where leather breathes with the design.

Is Tejus as delicate as it looks?

No. Natural density is higher than the pattern suggests. It handles daily wear if not subjected to direct abrasions. Avoid snagging on sharp edges, dry it if wet—like any vegetable-tanned leather. After 3–4 years, it improves.

Why does Tejus cost more than standard calf?

Because it's exotic and rare. Not mass-farmed; every hide is variable. Tanning is artisanal, not aggressive. And on a Patek Philippe Calatrava? You feel the difference in context—that's why the price exists.
