Wild Boar
Definition
Wild boar is an exotic leather characterized by naturally deep grain marked by pores, creating a distinctly tactile, almost three-dimensional pattern. In our atelier, we work with European wild boar leather vegetable-tanned by specialized tanneries that respect the fiber's inherent robustness. Unlike calf or goat, wild boar offers generous thickness (1.2-1.5mm) and extraordinary wear resistance, ideal for straps accompanying intense collections. The leather is deliberately not smooth: the texture remains intentionally raw, almost wild. Perfect for Rolex Submariner, Omega Seamaster, IWC Pilot in sportive versions, especially on wrists seeking material character. It requires no polished finishes; rather, wild boar develops a natural patina over time that tells your wrist's story. Standard sizes 18-22mm. Note: wild boar is not CITES-regulated, but availability remains selective. At Milano Straps, I recommend wild boar only to those who understand that each specimen is unique, with distinct veining and depth.
Frequently asked questions
Can wild boar scratch during daily wear?
Yes, and anyone who chooses wild boar knowingly accepts this. The leather is hard but not immune to superficial scratches. It's not a flaw: every scratch adds history to the strap, especially on a Rolex Submariner or IWC Pilot you actually live with. Different story if you seek flawless wild boar: then I recommend oiled finishes that reduce microabrasion, or I'd steer you toward Hermès box calf.
How long does wild boar take to develop natural patina?
Depends on wrist use and perspiration. On an Omega Seamaster worn weekly, you'll see the first signs within 6-8 months: the grain softens slightly, the tone deepens. On sports watches with frequent strap changes, patina emerges more slowly. Don't force it with aggressive oils: wild boar must age naturally, like a Hermès Birkin. The beauty of wild boar is it doesn't oxidize like box calf, maintaining structural integrity.
Is wild boar suitable for Patek Philippe Aquanaut or Nautilus?
Technically yes, if you choose a dark tone (brown, black) and controlled grain. Patek Aquanaut and Nautilus have modern geometric lines; wild boar adds robust character, perfect if you want dress-sport attitude. However, I find wild boar more natural on vintage Rolex, Tudor, or Breitling: there the granuosity heightens sports DNA. On Patek I prefer Box Calf or Hermès Crocodile, which maintain intrinsic elegance. At Milano Straps, don't force leathers onto watches: every pairing must sing.
