Chèvre / Generic Goat Leather
Definition
Chèvre is a goat leather with a fine, compact grain, naturally resistant and versatile. In tannery, Alran offers it in vegetable and modern versions, providing an interesting compromise between softness and structural integrity. Not "precious" leather in the exotic sense, but technically clean: tight fibers, controlled thickness, gradual aging without excess. For watch straps, chèvre offers elegant drape and an almost porcelain texture to the touch. Not CITES-regulated. Perfect on Submariner 40mm, Explorer 40mm, or vintage dress watches in dark versions; less suited to sports pieces where I prefer more robust leather. Alran executes vegetable and synthetic tannages: they vary in softness and patina. Chèvre ages with dignity, developing subtle patina without becoming slack. I recommend this leather to those seeking a daily strap, elegant, unpretentious—it is artisanal honesty, not status declaration.
Frequently asked questions
Can I fit a Alran chèvre strap on a 40mm Rolex Daytona?
Technically yes, but I advise against it. Chèvre is soft, elegant leather; the Daytona is sporty, calls for robust box calf or rubber straps. On a 40mm Explorer or a 36mm Datejust in gold—yes, excellent choice. Chèvre develops brown/amber patina over time, harmonizing beautifully with champagne or silver dials.
Is Alran chèvre vegetable-tanned or synthetic?
Alran produces both. Vegetable tannages have natural tannins, age with more character, require conscious maintenance (occasional conditioning, UV protection). Synthetics are more stable, predictable, suited to those wanting less variability. Personally I choose vegetable for dress straps: it is conversation, not mere function.
How much does an Alran chèvre strap cost compared to exotic leathers?
One-third, perhaps half the price of crocodile or ostrich. Chèvre is not exotic, it is classic, widespread leather: from Hermès to industrial tanneries. Value lies in Alran tannage and Milano Straps craftsmanship, not raw material rarity. A 20mm strap in Alran vegetable chèvre costs around 180–220 euros, depending on finish. Excellent value for a durable piece.
