Buttero

Definition

Buttero is a vegetable-tanned leather tanned by Conceria Walpier, a historic Tuscan tannery. When I choose it for my straps, I immediately appreciate its dense structure and remarkable ability to develop a natural patina over time. It's a robust leather, free from surface treatments, that breathes and adapts to the wrist with progressive softness. The fiber is compact, resistant to repeated flexing—essential for a watch strap subjected to daily stress. The color starts decisive (natural brown, black, cordovan) and lightens slightly with use and exposure. It's not a "fashionable" leather like Hermès Barenia, but for collectors of sports Rolex or field IWC, Buttero offers authenticity: a strap that ages beautifully, develops character, and doesn't imitate anything. It's the choice of the enthusiast who wants living leather, not an accessory.

Frequently asked questions

Which watches does Buttero work best on?

Buttero is perfect on sports instruments and vintage pieces: Rolex Submariner, GMT-Master II, Omega Seamaster, IWC Pilot's Watch. On a 36mm Datejust with champagne dial it manages to give solidity without disrupting the style. I wouldn't put it on a Patek Nautilus dress—there you need more refined leathers. On 20-22mm sizes (your sports Rolex lug width) Buttero reaches maximum potential: it's robust enough not to suffer from twisting, yet flexes perfectly with wrist movement.

How does Buttero age compared to other vegetable-tanned leathers?

Buttero ages visibly and in a controlled way. Unlike Barenia, which develops a golden honey patina, Buttero darkens slowly and creates decorative micro-cracks (checking) that give it texture. It's reversible: if you clean it well with a soft brush, it returns almost to its original color, but the patina remains underneath. Ideal for those who love "living leather" but don't want surprises. On a 20mm strap you wear daily, you'll notice the change after 2–3 months of intensive use.

Is Buttero suitable for straps in humid climates?

Yes, it's one of its strengths. Buttero's vegetable tanning makes it less sensitive to humidity than chrome-tanned leathers. If you live by the sea or in a tropical climate and wear a 22mm Rolex GMT daily, Buttero resists better than an aniline. One precaution: dry it thoroughly after prolonged contact with fresh water (sweat included) and let it breathe. Don't seal it in plastic. Once a month, light brushing prevents moisture buildup. It's built to last.
