Tuscany - Vegetable Tanned Leather | Milano Straps
Definition
Tuscany is Conceria Walpier's signature leather, vegetable-tanned using traditional Tuscan methods. I know it well: a hide that ages beautifully, developing patina and character over time—exactly what we want in a serious watch strap. The fiber is compact, the natural grip is excellent, and when it wraps around the wrist of a Rolex or Patek Aquanaut, you'll feel that density guaranteeing durability and elegance. It's not leather that showboats: it's leather that tells your story. Perfect from 18mm dress watches to 22mm tool watches. The key characteristic is its ability to develop a deep golden patina over time while maintaining structural integrity. Minimal maintenance required—a bit of cream occasionally—but it rewards you with a beauty that grows year after year.
Frequently asked questions
Is Tuscany suitable for sports watches like a Submariner or GMT-Master II?
Absolutely. In fact, it's one of my favorite pairings. Tuscany has the density to handle intense use—you see it on Rolex sports, Omega Seamaster, even IWC Pilot. Unlike more delicate leathers, Tuscany on a 20-22mm tool watch strap becomes almost a second bracelet. The patina it develops will have all the authenticity of your wrist. Exactly what you want from a serious watch.
How does Tuscany age compared to other vegetable-tanned leathers like Horween Chromexcel?
Walpier's Tuscany has slower, "softer" tanning compared to Chromexcel's aggressiveness. Where Chromexcel develops rapid darkening and oiliness, Tuscany creates gradual patina—almost imperceptible month to month. After a year on a Datejust 36 or Omega de Ville strap, Tuscany will have a deep honey tone, completely natural. It doesn't have Chromexcel's initial vibrancy, but that's exactly what collectors seeking sobriety and permanence over time appreciate.
Which Patek Philippe references does Tuscany work best on as a strap?
I prefer it on vintage Aquanaut—the leather allows that draping fluidity that modern rubber straps compromise. But also on Calatrava 36mm or 40mm, Tuscany says everything: it's a leather that doesn't compete with the dial, it supports it. On an 18-20mm strap for Calatrava or 22mm for vintage Nautilus, Tuscany adds that historical patina that modern leather straps can't deliver immediately. It's the choice of connoisseurs.
